Most organisations run a marketing site that describes the service and a separate system that delivers it. The site therefore holds a copy of facts that live somewhere else, and a copy goes out of date. Pew found that people click a search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appears, against 15% without one. This article gives the five costs of the split, and what changes when the site reads the same records as the team.

Because it holds a copy. Your prices, your availability, your service list and your opening hours exist in your operating system, and somebody retypes them onto a page.
A copy has one behaviour that matters. It goes out of date, and nothing tells you when it did.
Five costs follow.
| Cost | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Stale facts | A price rose in March, and the page shows the old one. |
| Manual upkeep | A person edits pages to reflect what the system already knows. |
| Broken enquiries | A form emails a mailbox, and nobody links the enquiry to a record. |
| No shared meaning | The site says one thing and your reports say another. |
| Nothing an AI can verify | The page carries prose, and prose gives a machine no structure to trust. |
The fifth cost changed in importance during 2025 and 2026, because the reader changed.
Pew Research Center studied real search sessions and published its findings on AI summaries and clicks.
Users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% of visits where none appeared. Users clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits.
Structure, and a claim it can check against something else.
The last item is where a copied site fails. Three pages describe the same service, a person edited two of them, and the three now disagree. A machine reading all three finds no reliable answer.
Because the site stops holding facts and starts reading them.
Consider one price. In a split arrangement, the price exists in your operating system and again on a page, and a person keeps the two aligned. In a single system, the page reads the price, so the two cannot disagree.
Three properties follow.
The Office for National Statistics reports UK SME AI use at 54% in 2026 in its 2023 to 2026 series, so the machine reader is now a large part of your audience.

Sense Future built engage.re, and it has run in production since December 2025.
A live system fixes accuracy, and it does not write your content. Research into how models select sources found that adding statistics, quotations and citations raises the chance of being cited, and that keyword stuffing lowers it.
Four rules follow, and each one is about the writing rather than the plumbing.
We cover the search side in Google AI Overviews and business visibility in the UK.
A council publishes service pages describing eligibility for a scheme. The rules changed in April, three pages carry the old rule, and a resident acts on the wrong page. The council holds the correct rule in a case management system that the website cannot read.
A care home group publishes fees and availability. The fees rose in January, the page still shows the old figure, and a family arrives with an expectation the group must now correct. One page instead of three hundred, and the same failure.
The care home software and holiday let software pages set out the sector detail. Our guides to direct booking websites and care home family portals show the same pattern in one sector.
Because a separate site holds a copy, and a copy goes out of date without telling you. Your prices, availability and service list already exist in your operating system, and somebody retypes them onto a page. A page that reads the record cannot disagree with it.
Pew Research Center found users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% of visits where none appeared. Users clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits. The visit now often ends at the summary.
Structure and checkable claims. Marked-up facts such as a price or an opening time. Specific figures with sources rather than adjectives. A question as a heading with the answer in the first sentence below it. The same fact stated the same way across your site.
Five. Stale facts, because a copy ages. Manual upkeep, because a person edits pages the system already knows about. Broken enquiries, where a form emails a mailbox and nothing links to a record. No shared meaning, so the site and your reports disagree. Nothing an AI can verify, because prose gives a machine no structure.
Not by itself. It removes the errors that cost you citations, and the writing still decides the outcome. Research into source selection found that statistics, quotations and citations raise the chance of being cited, and that keyword stuffing lowers it.
