Google Answers the Question Now. How to Be the Source It Uses.

Pew found that people click a search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appears, against 15% of visits without one. Your page still decides the answer, and a machine reads it instead of a person. Ranking and selection need different work. This article explains what an AI system can check about your organisation, why a template website fails that check, and what changes when your site reads your live records.

What has actually changed?

Pew Research Center studied real search sessions and published its findings on AI summaries and clicks.

Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits where a summary appeared, and on 15% of visits where none appeared. Users clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits.

Two conclusions follow for a business. Fewer visits reach your site, and the summary now carries your answer to the reader. Being the cited source therefore matters more than being the ranked result.

Ranking and selection are different problems

Question Ranking Selection by an AI system
Who decides? An index and a ranking model.A model choosing what to quote.
What wins?Relevance, links, page experience.A checkable claim it can attribute.
What loses?Thin or duplicated content.Prose with no specific fact in it.
What you getA click.A citation, and sometimes a click.

Research into how models select sources found that adding statistics, quotations and citations raises the chance of being cited, and that keyword stuffing lowers it. The old technique now works against you.

What can an AI system check?

Four things, and each one is a property of your page rather than an opinion about it.

  • Structured facts. A price, an address, an opening time or a service, marked up as data rather than written as prose.
  • Specific figures. A number with a source, which the model can quote and attribute.
  • Direct answers. A question as a heading, with the answer in the first sentence below it.
  • Consistency. The same fact stated the same way on every page that mentions it.
The fourth item is where most sites fail. Three pages describe the same service, a person edited two of them, and the three now disagree. A machine reading all three finds no reliable answer, so it quotes somebody else.

Why does a template website fail the check?

Because it holds a copy of facts that live somewhere else. Your prices, your availability and your service list exist in your operating system, and somebody retyped them onto a page.

A copy has one behaviour that matters. It ages, and nothing tells you when it did.

Three costs follow, and only the first is obvious.

  • The facts go stale. A price rose in March, and the page shows the old figure.
  • Somebody maintains it by hand. A person edits pages to say what the system already knows.
  • Nothing is verifiable. Prose with no structure gives a machine no fact to attribute.

What changes when the site reads the records?

The page stops holding facts and starts reading them.

Consider one price. In a split arrangement it exists twice, and a person keeps the two aligned. In a single system the page reads the price, so the two cannot disagree.

Three properties follow. The site is current by construction, because no copy exists to update. An enquiry becomes a record in the same estate your team works in. The structured data comes from the record rather than from a person remembering to add it.

We cover the operating side of this in your website and your records, one system or two copies.

The deeper cause

A machine reading your site faces the same problem a machine reading your database faces. Structure is present, and meaning is not.

A 2026 benchmark measured the effect of closing that gap. Three frontier models answered 99 business questions on a public dataset, twice each, and the second run added a 4KB document describing the measures.

Accuracy rose by 17 to 23 percentage points for every model, and the three models then became statistically indistinguishable from each other.

The conclusion in the researchers' words. "the most consequential architectural decision is not which frontier model to use but whether the system is grounded in authoritative business semantics at all." From Semantic Layers for Reliable LLM-Powered Data Analytics.

Declared meaning helps a machine that reads your site and a machine that reads your records. We set out the evidence in why AI gets your own business data wrong.

What ESRE Media offers

We build your website and your operating system as one estate on engage.re.

  • Your pages read your records. A price, an availability or a service list comes from the record, so no page holds a copy.
  • A change reaches your site within 60 seconds. Your team updates the record, and the page follows.
  • Structured data comes from your vocabulary. Your declared record types supply the markup, so the facts a machine reads match the facts your team holds.
  • An enquiry writes into your estate. A visitor's submission becomes a record your team already works in.
  • One gate decides public access. One place states which facts a public page may read, and every access is a recorded event.

Sense Future built engage.re, and it has run in production since December 2025.

What to do if you hold no live data yet

Four steps deliver most of the available gain, and none of them needs a new system.

  1. Mark up your key facts. Address, opening hours, services and prices, as structured data.
  2. Add a question heading with a direct answer. The answer belongs in the first sentence below the heading.
  3. Replace adjectives with figures. A number with a source is quotable, and an adjective is not.
  4. Fix your inconsistencies. Find every page that states a fact, and make them agree.

Step four costs the least and returns the most, because inconsistency is the reason a machine declines to quote you.

Be an identifiable organisation

A model attributes a claim to a name it can resolve. Three things make your organisation resolvable.

  • One consistent name and address across your site and your public listings.
  • Organisation markup on your pages, stating who you are.
  • Mentions elsewhere on sites you do not control. An analysis of 75,000 brands found brand mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks.

The third item carries most of the effect and takes the longest, so start it now rather than after the on-site work.

The same change at two sizes

A council publishes eligibility rules for a scheme. The rules changed in April, three pages carry the old rule, and an AI summary quotes whichever page it read. The council holds the correct rule in a case management system its website cannot read.

A care home group publishes fees and availability. The fees rose in January, the page shows the old figure, and a family arrives with an expectation the group must correct. One page instead of three hundred, and the same failure.

The care home software and holiday let software pages set out the sector detail. Our guides to direct booking websites and care home family portals show the same pattern in one sector.

What we cannot promise

  • No supplier controls whether an AI system cites you. We can remove the reasons it declines to.
  • The Pew figures describe one period of a changing market. Treat the direction as reliable and the exact numbers as dated.
  • A live site does not replace good writing. It removes the errors, and the writing still decides the outcome.

What to do this quarter

  1. Search for your own service, and record whether an AI summary appears above the results.
  2. Find one fact that appears on your site and in your operating system. Check whether the two agree.
  3. Add structured data for your key facts.
  4. Rewrite your three most important pages to answer a question in the first sentence.
  5. Then decide whether your site holds a copy of your facts, or reads the record.

Common questions

How much do Google AI Overviews reduce clicks?

Pew Research Center found users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% of visits where none appeared. Users clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits, so most visits with a summary end without a click to any site.

How do you get cited in an AI summary?

Give the model something checkable. Mark up your key facts as structured data. Use specific figures with sources rather than adjectives. Put a question as a heading with the answer in the first sentence below it. State the same fact the same way on every page. Research found statistics and citations raise citation rates, and keyword stuffing lowers them.

Is AI search optimisation different from SEO?

Yes. Ranking rewards relevance, links and page experience, and it delivers a click. Selection by an AI system rewards a checkable claim the model can attribute, and it delivers a citation. Thin content loses a ranking, and prose with no specific fact loses a citation.

Why does a template website fail?

Because it holds a copy of facts that live in your operating system, and a copy ages without telling you. Three pages then state the same fact differently, and a machine reading all three finds no reliable answer, so it quotes somebody else.

What matters most for AI visibility?

Mentions on sites you do not control. An analysis of 75,000 brands found brand mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks. That work takes the longest, so start it before the on-site changes rather than after them.
