What Dairy Software Must Handle

A dairy herd management system needs to go beyond what general livestock platforms like Herdwatch or AgriWebb offer. The specific requirements:

  • NMR / CIS milk recording integration. Automatic download of milk recording results, including individual cow yields, butterfat, protein, somatic cell counts, and lactose. InterHerd+ and UNIFORM Agri both integrate with NMR. Most general farm software does not.
  • Somatic cell count tracking. Individual cow SCC trends over time, flagging subclinical mastitis before it becomes clinical. This is the most important figure for dairy profit. It needs a trend for each cow, and not only a monthly bulk tank report.
  • Parlour data integration. Modern parlour systems (DeLaval, Lely, GEA, Fullwood) generate per-cow milking data every session: yield, conductivity, flow rate, milking duration. Getting this data into your herd management system rather than just the parlour's own screen is where most integrations fail.
  • Activity monitoring. Collar or ear tag systems (SCR, Afimilk, SenseHub, IceRobotics) track rumination, activity, and eating behaviour for heat detection and health alerts. The data helps with breeding decisions, and it finds illness early. It only helps if it reaches your main herd record, instead of sitting in a separate app.
  • TB testing records. UK dairy herds in high-risk areas face annual or more frequent TB testing. Records must be retained for 3 years plus 60 days per animal. Software needs to track test dates, results, reactor removals, and post-movement testing requirements.
  • BCMS / LIS compliance. Birth registrations, movement reporting, and the upcoming transition from BCMS to LIS in summer 2026.
  • Breeding and calving records. Service dates, bull or AI sire tracking, pregnancy diagnoses, calving dates, calving difficulty scores, and dam-calf linkage.

The most established dairy-specific software in the UK. Developed by NMR, it automatically downloads milk recording data, disease test results, and links to BCMS for movement reporting. Best for: larger dairy operations wanting comprehensive management software with international support and development.

Herd Companion (NMR)

NMR's free online portal for accessing milk recording results, bulk tank quality data, and disease test results. Not a full herd management system, but a useful data access layer for farms that use other software for day-to-day management.

Best for: supplementary data access alongside another herd management tool.

Total Dairy (SUM-IT)

A UK-developed herd management tool from SUM-IT Software. Designed for dairy farmers moving from manual records to computerised management. Handles event recording, report generation, and BCMS/ScotMoves+ notification. Simpler and more accessible than InterHerd+ or UNIFORM.

Best for: smaller dairy farms wanting straightforward computerised herd records without enterprise-level complexity.

Herdwatch

Mobile-first livestock management with BCMS integration and LIS readiness. Not dairy-specific, but handles the compliance side (movements, births, deaths, treatments) well. Does not integrate with NMR milk recording or parlour systems. Full Herdwatch review.

The mobile gap: dairy-specific platforms tend to be stronger on analysis but weaker on mobile usability. General livestock apps are better in the field but lack dairy data integration.
