Dairy Farm Software UK: Milk Recording, Herd Health, and TB Compliance

Dairy farms have software requirements that generic farm management platforms handle poorly. Milk recording through NMR or CIS, individual cow somatic cell count tracking, parlour data integration, heat detection from activity monitors, and TB testing records with 3-year-60-day retention periods. This article covers which platforms serve dairy operations specifically, where general livestock software falls short, and what a dairy-focused system needs to handle.

What Dairy Software Must Handle

A dairy herd management system needs to go beyond what general livestock platforms like Herdwatch or AgriWebb offer. The specific requirements:

  • NMR / CIS milk recording integration. Automatic download of milk recording results, including individual cow yields, butterfat, protein, somatic cell counts, and lactose. InterHerd+ and UNIFORM Agri both integrate with NMR. Most general farm software does not.
  • Somatic cell count tracking. Individual cow SCC trends over time, flagging subclinical mastitis before it becomes clinical. This is the single most commercially important data point for dairy profitability, and it requires per-cow trend analysis, not just a monthly bulk tank report.
  • Parlour data integration. Modern parlour systems (DeLaval, Lely, GEA, Fullwood) generate per-cow milking data every session: yield, conductivity, flow rate, milking duration. Getting this data into your herd management system rather than just the parlour's own screen is where most integrations fail.
  • Activity monitoring. Collar or ear tag systems (SCR, Afimilk, SenseHub, IceRobotics) track rumination, activity, and eating behaviour for heat detection and health alerts. The data is valuable for breeding decisions and early illness identification, but only if it feeds into your main herd record rather than sitting in a separate app.
  • TB testing records. UK dairy herds in high-risk areas face annual or more frequent TB testing. Records must be retained for 3 years plus 60 days per animal. Software needs to track test dates, results, reactor removals, and post-movement testing requirements.
  • BCMS / LIS compliance. Birth registrations, movement reporting, and the upcoming transition from BCMS to LIS in summer 2026.
  • Breeding and calving records. Service dates, bull or AI sire tracking, pregnancy diagnoses, calving dates, calving difficulty scores, and dam-calf linkage.

The Main Dairy Software Options

InterHerd+ (NMR)

The most established dairy-specific software in the UK. Developed by NMR, it automatically downloads milk recording data, disease test results, and links to BCMS for movement reporting. Comprehensive analysis tools for fertility, health, production, and genetics. Available as a desktop and web application.

Best for: dairy farms that milk-record through NMR and want deep analytical capability. The integration with NMR data is seamless because it is made by the same organisation.

UNIFORM Agri

An international dairy management platform used on thousands of farms worldwide, distributed through NMR in the UK. Strong on herd management, milk recording analysis, and reproduction management. Integrates with NMR data and with major parlour systems.

Best for: larger dairy operations wanting comprehensive management software with international support and development.

Herd Companion (NMR)

NMR's free online portal for accessing milk recording results, bulk tank quality data, and disease test results. Not a full herd management system, but a useful data access layer for farms that use other software for day-to-day management.

Best for: supplementary data access alongside another herd management tool.

Total Dairy (SUM-IT)

A UK-developed herd management tool from SUM-IT Software. Designed for dairy farmers moving from manual records to computerised management. Handles event recording, report generation, and BCMS/ScotMoves+ notification. Simpler and more accessible than InterHerd+ or UNIFORM.

Best for: smaller dairy farms wanting straightforward computerised herd records without enterprise-level complexity.

Herdwatch

Mobile-first livestock management with BCMS integration and LIS readiness. Not dairy-specific, but handles the compliance side (movements, births, deaths, treatments) well. Does not integrate with NMR milk recording or parlour systems. Full Herdwatch review.

Best for: dairy farmers who need compliance management (BCMS/LIS, treatments, movements) on a phone, alongside a separate milk recording system.

The mobile gap: dairy-specific platforms tend to be stronger on analysis but weaker on mobile usability. General livestock apps are better in the field but lack dairy data integration. Many dairy farms end up running both: a dairy platform for milk recording and analysis, plus Herdwatch or similar for mobile compliance recording. Two systems, two data sets, no unified view.

The Bespoke Case for Dairy

Dairy farming generates more data per animal than any other agricultural sector: milking data every session, milk recording monthly, activity monitoring continuously, health and fertility events throughout lactation. The challenge is not generating data. It is connecting it.

A bespoke system built for your dairy operation can pull NMR milk recording data, parlour system data, and activity monitor data into a single platform alongside BCMS/LIS compliance, TB records, breeding management, and farm accounts. One login. One animal record. One place where every data point about every cow is visible and connected.

For herds of 150+ cows, the efficiency gains from eliminating duplicate data entry and manual reconciliation between three or four separate systems translate directly into time savings measured in hours per week.
