Famly is one of the most feature-rich nursery management platforms available in the UK. Danish-built with a strong UK presence, it covers EYFS observations, parent communication, billing, staff management, and occupancy planning in a single system. But comprehensive features come with a higher price point. Some nurseries do not need everything Famly gives them. Others cannot justify the cost, with staff costs rising and margins tighter. There are real alternatives worth looking at. This article compares seven platforms that UK nurseries use as alternatives to Famly in 2026.

Famly is well-reviewed (4.7/5 on Capterra from 264 reviews, checked July 2026), so nurseries usually leave for fit and cost rather than quality. The most common reasons they consider alternatives:
Best for: Medium nurseries (30-80 places) that want comprehensive management covering EYFS, billing, parent communication, and staff management.
Connect Childcare (with its iConnect learning journal module) is one of the longest-established nursery software providers in the UK. The platform covers child registration, attendance tracking, EYFS observations and assessments, invoicing, and parent communication. iConnect handles learning journals with photo and video observations linked to the EYFS framework.
Its main strength is that it is reliable. Connect has been in the market for more than ten years. Many UK settings use it, and its support is well established. The billing module handles funded hours tracking, session-based invoicing, and GoCardless direct debit collection.
The limitation: the interface is not as modern as Famly's. Nurseries moving from Famly may find the user experience feels a step back visually, even if the functionality is comparable.
Pricing: Quote-based. Generally mid-range.
Best for: Settings where EYFS observations, assessments, and learning journeys are the primary requirement.
Ovivio is the result of a December 2025 merger between Blossom Educational and KidsKonnect, bringing together 17 childcare software brands from across the UK and Europe. The platform is tailored for UK nurseries, with particular strength in EYFS-aligned observations and assessments. A practitioner can record what they saw, with photographs and video. They link it to an EYFS area of learning. They then follow each child against the milestones. Ovivio also includes AI-assisted observations.
The platform covers attendance tracking, invoicing with funding administration, staff planning, and parent communication through a dedicated parent app. Ofsted-compliant reporting is built in, with automated progress reports that can be generated for inspections or parent meetings. It holds 4.9/5 on Capterra, from 10 reviews under the Blossom name (checked July 2026).
The limitation: EYFS framework linking is not available on the Essentials tier, so the cheapest plan is limited for settings that need developmental tracking. In-app payments and enquiry management require the Business tier at £179 a month. The merger is recent, and the platform is still consolidating multiple products into one experience.
Pricing: Flat-rate tiers. Essentials £79 a month, Professional £129 a month, Business £179 a month. Multi-Site is custom-priced for groups with five or more settings. All prices exclude VAT, with 10% off annual billing.
Best for: Settings that primarily need a learning journal and EYFS observation tool, without full nursery management features.
Tapestry is widely used across UK nurseries and primary schools for EYFS observations, and holds 4.2/5 on Capterra from 18 reviews (checked July 2026). The platform is focused specifically on recording observations, creating learning journals, and tracking progress. Parents receive updates through a dedicated portal.
Tapestry's pricing makes it accessible for small settings and childminders. The observations tools are well-designed and the EYFS framework mapping is thorough.
The limitation: Tapestry is not a nursery management platform. It does not handle billing, invoicing, attendance tracking, staff rostering, or occupancy planning. If you need those parts, you must run Tapestry next to another system. That is the same many-tool problem that sends nurseries looking for one platform.
Pricing: Affordable. Per-child pricing model.
Best for: Nurseries and after-school clubs that prioritise billing automation, GoCardless direct debit collection, and online registration.
Cheqdin is built specifically for UK and Irish childcare providers. CheqBill stands out. It bills for you, and it collects by direct debit through GoCardless. It works out the funded hours, takes the fees and sends the invoices. Almost nothing is done by hand. CheqForm handles online registration, and CheqComms manages parent communication.
In some nurseries the billing takes a great deal of staff time. Chasing payments. Working out funded hours against paid hours. Making the invoices. Cheqdin can save real time there.
The limitation: Cheqdin's EYFS observation tools are less developed than Ovivio's or Famly's. If your primary need is rich learning journals with detailed developmental tracking, Cheqdin is weaker in that area.
Pricing: Competitive. Quote-based with strong value proposition on billing automation.
Best for: Welsh childcare settings that need Welsh language support, CIW Active Offer compliance, and Curriculum for Wales tracking.
Wootzoo is the only nursery management platform with full Welsh language support. In Wales this is not an extra. The Active Offer means a Welsh-medium setting must work in Welsh. Care Inspectorate Wales also asks for different things from Ofsted. Wootzoo also supports the Curriculum for Wales framework alongside EYFS.
The limitation: Wootzoo's feature set is narrower than Famly's or Connect's for English nurseries. If you are not in Wales, the Welsh-specific features are irrelevant and the platform may not offer enough advantages over other alternatives.
Pricing: Quote-based.
Best for: UK nurseries that want strong Ofsted compliance reporting with automated evidence gathering.
Childcare Manager is a UK-focused platform covering child registrations, daily attendance tracking, staff rotas, automated billing, EYFS-compliant observations, and learning journals. The parent app gives live updates and photo sharing.
The Ofsted compliance focus means the platform is designed to generate the specific evidence types that inspectors look for. Automated reports reduce the manual preparation time before inspections.
Its limit is size. Fewer settings use it than Famly, Connect or Ovivio. There are fewer shared resources, and fewer practitioners who already know it when you hire.
Pricing: Per-child pricing (contact for current rates).
Best for: settings that want everything included from day one at a predictable cost, and that value recruitment and staff training as part of the package.
Parenta is a UK company established in 1999, offering nursery management software alongside the UK's largest early years training and apprenticeship programme. The software (formerly known as Abacus) is an all-in-one package. Management, EYFS tracker (Footsteps), daily diary (Dayshare), parent app, invoicing, registers, and over 100 financial and operational reports are all included at every pricing tier. There are no add-ons and no hidden costs.
Parenta also runs a free recruitment service that has placed over 15,000 apprentices into early years settings, and trains around 3,000 nursery staff per year through its apprenticeship programme. The Footsteps EYFS tracker links observations to the EYFS framework, shows next developmental steps, and includes two-year check and EYFS profile assessments. The funding summary report shows the gap between government funding and actual costs. Group operators can produce reports across all settings in a chain from a single dashboard.
The limitation: the interface feels dated in places compared to Famly or Ovivio. Not a self-serve sign-up: each setting is onboarded through a demonstration and training conversation. Some users report slow loading and occasional freezes. Online payments are not available directly from the app. The recruitment service places apprentices rather than experienced staff.
Pricing: By register size. From £50 plus VAT a month (up to 29 children) to £90 plus VAT a month (100 or more children). 10% off annual payment.

The gap this article ends on is the largest one in the market. A group with several sites needs four things. Different session patterns at each setting. One report across all of them. One bill for a family split between two. Staff moved between settings.
No platform holds that, and the reason is the same everywhere. Each vendor declares a child, a session, a setting and an invoice once, in the shape a single nursery needs. A group is then a collection of separate settings that must be added together by hand.
We build the other way. Every nursery we build for shares one foundation. It already holds a child, a session, a funded hour, a setting, a practitioner and an invoice. A group then owns one system across all its sites, built around the way it actually runs.
We explain that in bespoke software for a whole sector. We give the cost in what does it cost to own and run your own systems.
A group with several sites often finds that no platform holds all it needs. Different session patterns at each setting. One report across the whole group. One bill for a family with children at two sites. Staff moved between settings. For groups where off-the-shelf platforms require constant workarounds, a bespoke nursery system built around actual operational workflows can reduce administrative overhead and improve accuracy.
Connect Childcare is the best all-round choice for a medium nursery. Ovivio (formerly Blossom) has the strongest EYFS learning journals. Tapestry is the cheapest for observations alone. Cheqdin bills best, through GoCardless. Wootzoo is the only one with Welsh. Childcare Manager is best for Ofsted compliance. Parenta is an all-in-one with recruitment and training built in. The right choice depends on nursery size, budget, and whether you need full management or just EYFS tracking.
Famly is one of the more expensive options, with tiers of £79, £159 and £209 per month (excl VAT). Ovivio starts at £79 a month for Essentials. Tapestry and Childcare Manager use per-child pricing, so cost scales with occupancy. Parenta charges by register size, from £50 to £90 a month plus VAT. Connect Childcare is quote-based. Always compare based on your actual child count and required features.
All major alternatives support EYFS observations, learning journals, and progress tracking. Ovivio and Connect have the strongest assessment tools. Childcare Manager focuses on Ofsted compliance automation. Tapestry specialises in observations but lacks broader management features.
Famly, Connect, Ovivio, and Cheqdin all support funded hours tracking. Automation level varies: some auto-calculate funded vs paid hours per session, others require manual allocation. See our funded hours tracking guide for a deeper comparison.
